SOX STUBER PITCH FOR HONEY BARNS ON THE FULTON ( FUSILEERS ) LEAGUE

THE FULTONIAN Stoddard pitched a fine game, striking out eleven of the opposing men but due to many errors, Fulton as again on the tail end of the score which was 7 to 4. This was our first league game. Tuesday, May 7, Central High School, champions of Syracuse last year, came here. "Sox" STUBER occupied the mound and "Ernie" Niccoli was behind the bat. Fulton was ahead till the last inning when Central made a two-run rally and tied the score, three all. The coach of Central High, after a consultation with "Zing" Hughes, decided it was too dark to play ball. So the ball game was called a tie. Saturday, May 11, the team traveled to Carthage and there we annexed a victory. It was a loosely contested game featured by many errors. "Sox" STUBER did the hurling with De Bottis on the receiving end. De Bottis soon retired in favor of Niccoli who assumed his duties with a will. Fulton traveled home on the same bus with Oswego and this is the first time that Fulton returned home victorious and Oswego defeated from an out-of-town trip in many years. The score of the game between Fulton and Carthage was 11 to 7.

The following Wednesday Fulton was trounced by Vocational High from Syracuse to the tune of 4 to 2. Stoddard was on the mound and De Bottis backstopping. It was a pitchers' duel as each pitcher handed out only one hit. This game was very interesting, as the score tells. Saturday, May 18, Fulton entertained her ancient rival, Oswego. At this time Oswego and Fulton were tied for second place in the Oswego- Jefferson County League. This was the first game in which "Heifer" Diffin played and he gave a good account of himself by catching several almost impossible flies and connecting for three hits, one of these a double, scoring Wardhough and Herner ahead of him. At no time was Oswego in the scoring with Fulton. "Sox" STUBER did the twirling with Niccoli behind the bat. The final score after this batting "bee" was 12 to 3.

The following Saturday, May 25, Fulton and Carthage clashed on the Arrowhead diamond for the second time this season. It was a hardfought contest, with Haller of Carthage leading the attack for his mates by making two homers. One of these occurred in the second inning and other in the fifth. Stoddard hurled fine baseball until the fifth inning. He was then replaced by STUBER, who finished the game. In the fifth inning high, fly ball hit by Squire of Carthage, began to descend over the heads ol the eager, excited crowd which was too near the first base line. Chubb, Fulton's first bagger, and Niccoli, catcher, attempted to catch the ball wit the result of a collision in which Chubb and Niccoli were knocked uncor scious. After fifteen minutes' delay, Chubb resumed the game. Niccol was taken to the doctor and later on he watched the game from the bench The game ended in a victory for Fulton, the score being 11 to 9. At 1 present time Fulton is leading the league with three victories and on defeat.

Drohan. Mr. Drohan wanted to organize a group who was genuinely interested in athletics. He wanted to investigate the possibility of upgrading conditions in the school's program to a point where Fulton High could compete on the same level as other central New York schools. The original group of officers were Francis Miller, President, Dan McGinnis, Vice President, Bud Arnold, Treasurer, and Gene Adams, Secretary. While the name has been changed to the Fulton Athletic Boosters, Inc., the organization's Statement of Purpose, as published in the Fulton Patriot in 1958, remains the same.
